“The United Nations High Level Political Forum (HLPF) was mandated in 2012 by the outcome document of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20). The format and organizational aspects of the HLPF are outlined in General Assembly resolution 67/290.
The HLPF meets every year under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council, and every fourth year, it also meets under the auspices of the General Assembly. The goal of the HLPF is to provide political leadership, guidance and recommendations on follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The HLPF convenes “thematic sessions” and considers the Voluntary National Reviews submitted by Member States. The outcome of the HLPF is a “Ministerial Declaration” .

1) The 2023 HLPF (https://hlpf.un.org/2023) will take place, in person, 10-19 July 2023 in New York, with the theme “Accelerating the recovery from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at all levels.
The HLPF in 2023 will also review in-depth:
a. SDG6 – clean water and sanitation
b. SDG7 – affordable and clean energy
c. SDG9 – industry, innovation and infrastructure
d. SDG11 – sustainable cities and communities
e. SDG17 – partnerships for the Goals
2) The official session of the Major Groups and Other Stakeholders, of which the Stakeholder Group on Ageing is a member, will take place on Friday, 14 July 2023, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

7) SDG Summit - https://hlpf.un.org/sdg-summit
Every fourth year of the implementation 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, an SDG Summit is held under the auspices of the General Assembly (the first one was held in 2019). In 2023, the SDG Summit in 2023 will mark the mid-point of the implementation of the 2030.Agenda. It will be held from 18 to 19 September 2023 and will be chaired by the President of the General Assembly. The outcome of the Summit will be a negotiated political declaration.

The Stakeholder Group on Ageing facilitates annual participation of its members in preparatory events leading up to the HLPF and during the HLPF itself.
